The good news is that back in the '90s, there was a secret plan to genetically engineer clones of Senator Palpatine!
[Okay, the plan wasn't secret and it's just the Senator, not Senator Palpatine. Allegedly. -- Ed.]
Several genetic clones of the iconic tree were made (grown?) and one special sapling was finally trucked into Big Tree Park on Monday, February 18, 2013 -- a little over a year after its progenitor went up in smoke. Although genetically the trees may be identical, there's simply no replacing the original Senator.
Give it another 3,500 years, though, and aesthetically no one will know the difference.
On a side note: since we've got the cloning of ancient trees down pat, can we please move onto the Tyrannosaurus Rex?
